2)The translator should have taken notice of the organization of the passengers of the railroad car. Three types of men ride the train: the prisoners, the common prisoners and their guards. The two types of men turn out to be tormentors of the remaining one type of men.

3)"The prisoners" in the paragraph mean "the national security criminals," who had committed the crime of treason or something. The "common criminals" in this case mean the culprits of the ordinary crimes which are usually committed in the course of ordinary lives, burglary for one. The author remarks that the common criminals and guards had done various inflictions on the prisoners with whom they travelled: jibes, insults, kicks and spits, etc.
